ABOUT THE BREED English Setters were largely bred during the nineteenth century to work with guns and followed on from the setting spaniels of earlier times. They were, and still are, used to run ahead of the guns to scent and find game. Because of this they should carry the head high and be able to run easily over rough terrain for long periods of time. Given this history do not be surprised if a setter is not the easiest dog to recall or stay to heel. It is not what he was bred for.
This is John's puppy Gemma
This is Mick's puppy Lennon These adorable puppies grow into slobbery, energetic dogs who are desperately unhappy if you leave them alone for long periods of time. Please think hard about whether or not a setter is the dog for you. If it is, they are the most wonderful, loving, good natured dogs in the whole world. You will fall completely in love with the breed forever. If you have had setters before you will know exactly what we mean.
They do require some grooming and trimming to keep the silky coat beautiful. The coats are usually Orange Belton , Blue Belton and Tricolour which is the Blue Belton with Tan .Belton is the all over flecking desirable in an English Setter's coat. Puppy prices will vary from breeder to breeder and usually range from £500 to £650. Be warned that a higher price does not always mean a better dog. Be prepared to travel to collect the dog that you feel really meets your requirements. Most people nowadays do that quite happily. Under the British Veterinary Association Hip Dysplasia scheme the breed average is 19. This is a total of the scores for both hips and will be expressed as 6/6 , 10/5 and so on. This is calculated by measuring the spaces around the hip joint as dysplastic hips are loose fitting and may lead to osteoarthritis. Breeding from selected stock is only part of the puzzle as correct feeding and exercise is essential as well. Puppies should have no access to a staircase and puppies up to six months should have unlimited free exercise but only short walks on a lead . Lots of love and attention will also help produce and rear a sound animal.
